A Reclamation of the Original Intention of Medicine

True medicine is rooted in the spiritual dimensions of reality. 

Before Hippocrates, therapeutic attempts were based on religious or magical beliefs and were commonly practiced by priests, spiritual healers, and medicine men/women. Healing and the sacred were inseparable. Ancient healing systems often combined empirical observations with spiritual beliefs, creating a holistic understanding of health that addressed both physical and metaphysical aspects of well-being. 

Even as Hippocrates brought greater rationality to medicine, the Hippocratic tradition still emphasized the independence of mind, body, and spirit, and the need for harmony between the individual and the social and natural environment. The concept of "Hygieia," or holistic health, encompassed physical fitness, mental resilience, emotional balance, and social harmony — emphasising the interconnectedness of body, mind, and spirit. 

Healing was not just a question of physical treatment, but also encompassed psychological and spiritual dimensions — an insight that is only now receiving renewed attention in modern medicine.

Working with the principle of Anamnesis Medicine

Anamnesis (ἀνάμνησις) is an ancient Greek word that means “remembering again” or “recollection.” But its depth goes far beyond ordinary memory.

ana = again, upward, back

mnēsis = memory

Anamnesis = calling back what was forgotten

In Platonic philosophy, anamnesis means:

All true knowledge is remembering

Plato taught that the soul already knows truth, and learning is the act of remembering one’s original knowing.

So anamnesis is:

• not instruction

• not correction

• but revelation of latent knowledge
